Acorns, or oak nuts, have remained an important and nutritious food source for many animals, including humans, around the world for hundreds of thousands of years. The oak tree has sustained human civilization since its inception in countless ways. Why have we in our modern culture nearly forgotten how to harvest, process, honor and eat this incredible food? Learn to identify, harvest, process, store, and use acorns in the kitchen. We’ll cover the whole process: identification, gathering, storage, processing, leaching and cooking. Homemade acorn bread, acorn muffins and other acorn-based snacks will be available as free samples.

This course is designed to help artists begin to use color more effectively in their portraits. The venerable trois crayons technique, using sanguine, black and white chalks (and pencils) was favored by masters as a way to create preparatory studies for portrait painting, but are beautiful in their own right. Learn how to create a layered watercolor landscape by using different tools for ‘masking’, such as wax crayons and masking fluid. This all-levels workshop demystifies landscapes through a series of exercises to build observational drawing skills. We’ll learn techniques for using dip pens with ink with watercolor, and combines that with additional masking tools effectively build layers. Students can either buy themselves the required materials or they can buy material kits from the Mix, an art store in Brunswick.
